Carr expertly entwines the love stories of couples from three different generations in her latest warmhearted Sullivan's Crossing visit, following The Family Gathering (2018). Although bad things do happen to good people here, Carr's characters overcome difficult histories and face immense challenges, including PTSD and a brain tumor, managing to be happy and productive, thus imparting a feeling of well-being to the reader. Teenagers Finn and Maia are planning for high-school graduation, prom, and college when Maia begins experiencing some scary symptoms. Finn's dad, long-widowed pub-owner Rob, is taken with Leigh, the new doctor in town, but she's never gotten past being jilted on the eve of her wedding. Orphaned at a young age, she was raised in Chicago by her aunt Helen, an independent, never-married schoolteacher turned best-selling mystery writer. When Helen comes to visit, she meets septuagenarian Sully, and the two very private individuals find that they're still young enough for romance. Sullivan's Crossing fans will enjoy new and reappearing characters, while lovers of smart, contemporary, uplifting romance will want to visit Carr's nurturing community. After saying farewell to her high-pressure life in Chicago and coming to Timberlake, CO, to run the local clinic, it doesn't take Dr. Leigh Culver long to know she's made the right decision. She loves the town, the people, the slower pace, and, surprisingly, she might even come to care for Rob Shandon, widowed pub owner and single father of two teenage sons. The only thing she misses is the aunt who raised her, so how wonderful that Aunt Helen, a globe-trotting mystery writer, has come to visit. Now Helen can discover, as well, that there is more to Colorado to love than one would imagine. VERDICT Realistic, down-to-earth folks you'll want to call friends, a Rocky Mountain setting as picturesque and appealing as they come, and two poignant love stories add another superb chapter to a series that will please both romance and women's fiction fans. Carr (The Family Gathering) lives in Las Vegas, NV.
