Our story begins when Snow Ashley Gable is 8 years old and moves to a suburb of Chicago with her mother, Leigh, who poses as a wedding consultant but in reality gets paid for her services by rich men sneaking around on their wives. Snow makes a secret friend, Luke, 12, whose father is the school's respected swim coach in public and a sadistic monster in private. A violent incident leads to Luke being sent away to reform school. When he returns years later, Snow goads him into sleeping with her and ends up pregnant. Even though they're much too young, Luke asks her to marry him, but trouble and a miscarriage keep them apart. After another long separation, Snow, a successful DJ with her own talk show, returns to Chicago. She and Luke reconcile, but events from their past and the people associated with them converge to make the way to love perilous. Stone's poetically expressive tale of intriguing characters and tough dilemmas is truly poignant and heartrending. ((Reviewed September 1, 2005)) Copyright 2005 Booklist Reviews.
