Here Lena returns to the poverty-stricken rural backwater where she was raised to check on her uncle Hank, the tactiturn reformed junkie who raised her after her mother died. What she finds is a town decimated by methamphetamine addiction (including her long sober uncle), with the drug dealing controlled by skinheads and abetted by a corrupt sheriff's department. When she is forced to watch as her former childhood friend and neighbor, who has long battled addiction, is set on fire, she shuts down, convinced that her best recourse is to keep her mouth shut even as the local sheriff tries to get her to talk. That's when Jeffrey gets the call that his detective has been arrested. He and Sara, who is drained from fighting a grueling medical malpractice suit, are immediately drawn into the investigation, which leads to surprising revelations about some of the town's most upstanding citizens. In addition, Slaughter throws in a shocker of an ending that has serious implications for the future of the series. Mystery of the monthIf you are one of those readers who pages ahead to see what's gonna happen, do NOT do that with Karin Slaughter's latest tour-de-police-force, Beyond Reach. Seriously, the ending is such a surprise it left me momentarily speechless (and anyone who knows me can tell you what a rarity that is). Protagonists Sara Linton, the Grant County, Georgia, coroner, and her husband, Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver, team up for their sixth adventure. Their on-again, off-again marriage is distinctly on-again, as the two pair up to help a fellow police officer suspected in the arson death of a woman in backwoods Georgia. The two are in fine form, by turns acerbic and nurturing, long-suffering yet ultimately supportive. From a medical-examiner procedural aspect, Slaughter's novels are as gripping as anything from Kathy Reichs or the early Patricia Cornwell, and when she gets into the intricacies of relationships she hits the ball right out of the park. Additionally, there's enough gruesome medical detail to make genre junkies line up for the next installment. Just remember: no peeking! Copyright 2007 BookPage Reviews.

Slaughter returns from a stand-alone (Triptych, 2006) to the adventures of Medical Examiner Sara Linton and Det. Lena Adams, in a case that feels more like a chapter in an ongoing family saga than a discrete novel.Little does Dr. Sara Linton, remarried to her ex, Grant County (Georgia) Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver, know that the day she's deposed concerning her responsibility for the death of cancer-stricken Jimmy Powell, 12, will be the most relaxing day of her week. Bad-girl Lena has been arrested for murder after the Elawah County police found her on the scene of an exploding Cadillac with a dead woman inside. Once Sara and Jeffrey arrive, Lena escapes, leaving Sara holding the bag. In fact, it's hard to find a pair of clean hands in Lena's family, or, indeed, in Elawah County, and after a while you may give up trying to assign guilt and just wait in exhaustion for the whole mess, powered by Slaughter's nonstop intensity, to just burn itself out.As if Lena and Sara hadn't been through enough, the fadeout suggests that they're not going to get much respite in between books either.
